My goddaughter had her 8th birthday “family” party this weekend. After the gifts were open and the cake was eaten, the adults gravitated to their conversation groups – the grandparents sat in the living room talking about politics and restaurants. The fathers and uncles gathered in the garage to look at the new car, and the mothers and aunts (and godmother) drank coffee and talked about how expensive American Girl doll clothes are.
The goddaughter and her cousin started playing under the dining room table. At one point she came into the living room to root through the toybox and explained to us that the toybox was the dump, the adults were bears that lived at the dump, and she was searching for food to take back to her cousin.
“Why don’t you just go to the grocery store to get your food.”
“Well Aunt Elle, I don’t have any money to pay for it because we’re homeless, and I’m too young to get a job, so I have to go to the dump.”
Whatever happened to 8 year olds playing Barbies???
